The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations’ knockout stage started on Saturday night with exciting matches between Angola and Namibia and Nigeria to Cameroon.
While The Angolans danced and thrashed Namibia 3-0, the Nigerian Super Eagles hammered Cameroon 2-0 with a brace by Ademola Lookman and a quality display by Victor Osimehn. On Sunday, two clashes emerged with quality football and great drama.
Equatorial Guinea vs Guinea (0-1)
The nail-biting clash between Equatorial Guinea and Guinea, the Guinean Derby, where the latter emerged victorious with a slender 1-0 win. Guinea showcased defensive resilience and clinical finishing, securing their passage to the quarterfinals. Equatorial Guinea fought valiantly, dominated, and, despite being one man down after Federico Bikoro was sent off - even won a penalty. Emilio Nsue, the tournament’s top scorer with five goals, sent the shot straight to the post, and the Equatorial Guineans were in shock. Deep in stoppage time, Mohamed Bayo scored the winner, and with less than a minute to play, the single-goal deficit proved insurmountable. Guinea's triumph sets the stage for their continued journey in the tournament, leaving fans, who created a fantastic atmosphere at the Stade Olympique Alassane Ouattara, eager to witness their next challenge.
Egypt vs Democratic Republic of Congo (1-1, DR Congo won on penalties)
In a heart-stopping encounter, Egypt faced the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the match ended in a 1-1 draw in regular time, thanks to goals by Meschal Elia and Mohamed Mostafa. The drama escalated in the penalty shootout, where DR Congo held their nerve to secure a thrilling victory despite Egypt having spot-kick expert Mohamed “Gabaski” Abou Gabal. Egypt's quest for glory was halted in a competition showcasing knockout football's unpredictable nature. DR Congo's resilience and penalty prowess propelled them into the quarterfinals, setting the tone for their upcoming battles. Egypt returned to Cairo with players and coach Rui Vitoria refusing to speak with the media. Mohamed Salah won’t return to the Ivory Coast to play for Egypt in what would’ve been probably his last AFCON.
