Tragic Discoveries and National Mourning
On the morning of September 1, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Spokesperson announced the discovery of six bodies of Israeli civilian hostages who had been held captive by Hamas for over 300 days before their recent deaths. Among the deceased were two dedicated football fans: Hersh Goldberg-Poulin, a supporter of Hapoel Jerusalem and Werder Bremen, and Uri Danino, a Beitar Jerusalem fan. The news sent shockwaves through the Israeli football community and beyond.
Nationwide Protests and Solidarity Strike
In response to the tragic news, protests erupted across Israel, with citizens rallying against the war and demanding the release of remaining hostages. Many workplaces and restaurants called for a solidarity strike to facilitate widespread participation in these demonstrations. Despite this national movement, the Israeli football authorities proceeded with the scheduled matches, including the highly anticipated game between Hapoel Be'er Sheva and Bnei Sakhnin, the league's most prominent Arab-Israeli club.

Pitch Invasion and Confrontation
As the anthem concluded, a group of enraged Hapoel Be'er Sheva fans stormed onto the pitch, some wielding poles, and rushed towards the Bnei Sakhnin stands. It took several minutes for police and stewards to regain control of the situation, by which time the Bnei Sakhnin players had already retreated to their dressing room.
Failed Attempts at Reconciliation
Efforts to resume the match were unsuccessful. Bnei Sakhnin initially cited safety concerns for their refusal to return to the pitch. Despite assurances from both the Football Association match observer and police officers that it was safe to proceed, Bnei Sakhnin remained steadfast in their decision not to play. Even discussions between the owners of both clubs failed to break the impasse.
Match Cancellation and Pending Investigation
After an hour of negotiations, the Israeli Professional Football Leagues (IPFL) board officially canceled the match. In its statement, the IPFL acknowledged both the pitch invasion by Hapoel Be'er Sheva fans and Bnei Sakhnin's subsequent refusal to play. The IPFL also announced that the Israeli FA disciplinary committee would make the final decision regarding the events and their consequences.
