Two weeks ago we published here that if things will go as planned, the Israeli Ligat Ha’Al and Palestinian Dauri al-Muhtarifin will be the first two Middle Eastern leagues to return from the coronavirus break.
We tend to forget that sometimes in the Middle East it’s hard to make plans. It’s either someone in the Syrian FA was reading our blogs and decided to act fast, or that finally, we can say that there is one federation in the region that can mark a date, work towards it and execute. Mabrouk.
On Thursday, May 28, the Syrian League returned with the match between al-Wathba and Foutoua, in the first match of Matchday 17 of the competition.
Al-Wathba, who are chasing Tishreen, the league leaders, didn’t waste time.
After 19 minutes they were already leading 1-0 after a successful penalty by Hadi al-Masri. On the verge of the halftime whistle, Saad Ahmed scored the second and made it 2-0 to the hosts. Abd Al-Hafyan added another one in 54th minute and nine minutes Wael al-Rifaee notched the fourth, as the Homs’ team was hammering the Deir ez-Zor club.
On the 91st minute, Wasim Bawarshi has saved some of Foutoua’s respect with a beauty shot and made it 4-1, but it was way too little and too late.
Friday’s matches will host some massive games in Syria. Tishreen versus Al-Jaish, Al-Ittihad Aleppo against Al-Shorta and Hottin that will face Al-Nwaeir.
